Acadia National Park

Imagine towering granite cliffs, the crisp scent of pine needles, and the endless expanse of the Atlantic Ocean. That's Acadia National Park, a jewel of the Northeast nestled along the rugged Maine coastline. We spent five nights exploring this breathtaking park, and I can confidently say it's an unforgettable destination – even with our girls being only 3 and 5 at the time. We focused mostly on family-friendly hikes, but cannot wait to get back when the girls are older to take on some more challenging hikes! Be prepared for the changing Maine weather; we experienced warm sunshine and chilly rain, often within the same day!

Hiking for All: Rain or Shine

Acadia offers a vast network of hiking trails, catering to every skill level. We found plenty that were family friendly. Don't let a rainy forecast deter you, embrace the rain and fog! A local recommended Great Head Trail, and even in the drizzle, the views were spectacular and the crowds much smaller.

Beyond the Trails

  • Sand Beach: Splash in the chilly Atlantic waters or build sandcastles on this scenic beach. The girls love taking a polar plunge, although it was short-lived!

  • Bar Island: An island that is near Bar Harbor that you can access via a land bridge that is only accessible at low tide for a unique experience. You only need an hour or so to walk across the ‘bridge’ and experience the island, just make sure to return before the tide rises or you could be stuck for hours!

  • Jordan Pond House: I have heard nothing but great things about the popovers but sadly, we missed this one as the line was too long!

  2. Charming Bar Harbor

Situated just outside the park, the coastal town of Bar Harbor is a must-visit. It beckons with its quaint charm and stunning views of Cadillac Mountain. This picturesque town is a gateway to one of Maine's most iconic landscapes, offering a perfect blend of coastal beauty and outdoor adventure. Stroll along the waterfront dotted with lobster boats and sailboats, where the salty breeze mingles with the aroma of freshly baked blueberry pies from local cafes, and don’t forget to eat as much lobster as possible! I highly recommend the lobster roll at Paddy’s Irish Pub or the lobster pizza at Geddy’s!
